PARIS — Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is losing ground to far-left challenger Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the French presidential race, according to polling conducted exclusively for POLITICO.

The survey, carried out by Cluster 17 between Oct. 19 and Oct. 22, showed Philippe with 16% trailing Mélenchon on 18.5%. Cluster 17’s poll on the presidential election last month had the two tied at 19% apiece.

Both leaders are significantly behind far-right front-runner Marine Le Pen, who held her first presidential campaign rally on Sunday. Le Pen’s candidacy does not appear to have been significantly affected by allegations that her protégé Jordan Bardella made antisemitic comments in private as a teenager. Bardella, who was reelected as president of the National Rally at the far-right party’s conference this past weekend, has repeatedly denied the accusations.

Philippe’s main ideological rival, fellow former PM Gabriel Attal, fares little better in the poll. When tested instead of Philippe as the main centrist candidate, Attal netted just 12%.

Raphaël Glucksmann, fresh off his dominant victory in a center-left primary, is holding steady at fourth place with 13% in Cluster 17’s survey. The pollster found Glucksmann would net 29% of those who supported President Emmanuel Macron in 2022, while 49% of those voters back Philippe. Macron cannot run for a third consecutive term.

Conservative leader Bruno Retailleau is still struggling to break into double digits. Though he held steady in the poll, he has a new cause for concern: the rising popularity of David Lisnard, the right-wing mayor of Cannes.

In a scenario in which Lisnard is added to the race, he eclipses Retailleau and also chips away at support for Le Pen.

A poll unveiled last week found little change in the dynamics of the race following the rioting that emerged on the sidelines of massive protests across France on Oct. 17. Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets again on Saturday.

The center-right candidate said at a POLITICO event that his far-right rival was selling the French ‘fantasy’ plans on the economy.

The French president wants to stop his U.S. counterpart from bailing out of France’s G7 summit.

The anti-immigrant MEP is betting the race for city hall will boost her name recognition ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

A person close to Le Maire told POLITICO that the French politician left the residence as soon as he saw Epstein.
